Compare the systems you would actually deploy

A useful Nuxeo-versus-Alfresco comparison starts with the business workflow and the exact release under consideration. A technology list can orient a developer, but it cannot establish migration effort, operational cost or application fit.

The original September 2022 comparison was a high-level developer overview. Use the following assessment to turn that starting point into an architecture decision. The documentation references below cover Nuxeo LTS 2025 and Alfresco Content Services 23.2; this is not a claim that they are equivalent releases or the latest available products.

The Nuxeo search upgrade guide describes the LTS 2025 change. The Alfresco documentation portal provides links to current and previous release documentation. Compatibility must be checked for the actual package combination.

Separate platform selection from migration scope

List content types, metadata constraints, permissions, versions, workflow history and integrations before estimating the move. A destination that can store a file is not yet a replacement for the application that uses it.

Choose a pilot that includes awkward records and a real business owner. Verify retrieval, search, downloads, access denial and downstream integrations after migration. Record exceptions rather than hiding them inside an average success rate.

Compare operating costs on the same assumptions

Use a common workload and retention period when comparing subscriptions, infrastructure, search capacity, backups, support and maintenance. Include the effort to update custom code and test business workflows during an upgrade. Do not infer a cost or performance winner from a database category alone.

The decision should identify which requirements each candidate meets, which require custom work, and what evidence is still missing. For help preparing that assessment, see Maretha migration services and our migration planning lessons.
